Common problems

Is your gate motor doing this?

These are the signs we diagnose most often. If you recognize one, switch the operator off and call — catching it early usually means a smaller repair.

01

Motor hums, gate doesn't move

Usually a failed start capacitor, stripped drive gear or seized arm. Running it like this can burn the motor — turn it off and call us.

02

Opens partway, then stops or reverses

Limit settings out of adjustment, a dirty or misaligned safety sensor, a weak battery or the force setting reacting to resistance.

03

Grinding, clicking or squealing

Worn gears, a loose chain or rack, dry bearings or a failing gearbox. Caught early, it's a small repair instead of a new operator.

04

Completely dead — no lights, no sound

Tripped breaker, blown fuse, failed transformer or a control board damaged by a power surge or lightning strike.

05

Remote or keypad stopped working

Dead transmitter battery, failed receiver, lost programming or interference. We reprogram and replace remotes for every brand.

06

Gate won't stay closed or drifts open

Limit switch failure, a broken lock or latch, or hinge and track alignment problems that strain the motor.

Sound familiar? A technician can be at your property in 60–90 minutes.

How we work

From diagnosis to a working gate — usually in one visit

  1. 01

    Written quote

You get a clear price before any work starts. If repair doesn't make sense, we'll tell you honestly and quote a replacement.

  3. 03

    Repair on the spot

Our trucks carry common boards, capacitors, gears, chains, batteries and sensors, so most motors are fixed during the first visit.

  4. 04

    Test & tune

We set limits and force, test every safety device and walk you through manual release for power outages.

Electric gate motor repair you can count on

An automatic gate is only as reliable as its operator. When the motor fails, your gate either stays open — leaving your home or business unprotected — or stays closed and traps cars inside. Electric Gate Repair Services has spent more than 15 years diagnosing and repairing gate motors across South Florida, from single residential slide gates to high-traffic commercial barrier arms.

We work on sliding gate openers, swing gate operators, rack-and-pinion drives, barrier arms and rolling-door operators for homes, HOAs, condominiums, warehouses and commercial properties. Our technicians are bilingual (English and Spanish) and every repair includes a full safety check of photo-eyes, edges and reversing functions.

South Florida is hard on gate motors

Heat, humidity, salt air near the coast and summer lightning storms shorten the life of gate operators here. Control boards are damaged by power surges, batteries wear out faster in the heat and exposed gears corrode. Regular preventive maintenance catches most of these problems before the gate stops working.

Repair or replace?

If your operator is more than 10–15 years old, discontinued, or has flood damage, a replacement can be the smarter investment. We’ll give you an honest comparison and, if you decide to upgrade, handle the full gate opener installation — including battery backup, safety sensors and access control like keypads and smartphone apps.

FAQ

Gate Motor Repair — questions & answers

Why does my gate motor hum but the gate won't move?

The most common causes are a failed start capacitor, a stripped drive gear, a seized arm or a gate that is binding on its track or hinges. Turn the operator off — running a humming motor can burn it out — and call us for a same-day diagnosis.

Can my gate motor be repaired, or do I need a new one?

Most gate motors can be repaired: control boards, capacitors, gears, limit switches, batteries and sensors are all replaceable parts. We only recommend a new operator when the unit is discontinued, parts are no longer available, or flood or lightning damage makes repair more expensive than replacement — and we'll show you both prices.

Do you repair LiftMaster gate openers?

Yes. LiftMaster is the brand we service most, including the RSL12UL, CSL24UL, HDSL24UL, RSW12UL, LA400 and Mega Arm barrier operators. We also repair Viking, Eagle, Beninca, CAME, DoorKing, BFT and other major brands.

How long does a gate motor repair take?

Most repairs are completed on the first visit, usually within 2–4 hours, because our trucks carry the most common parts. If a brand-specific part has to be ordered, we secure the gate so your property stays protected until we return.

What happens to my electric gate during a power outage?

Operators with battery backup keep working for a limited number of cycles. Without backup, every gate opener has a manual release so you can open it by hand — we'll show you how during the service visit and can add a battery backup or solar kit.

Can storms or lightning damage my gate opener?

Yes. Power surges from storms and lightning are one of the most common causes of failed control boards in South Florida. We repair surge-damaged operators and can install surge protection to prevent it from happening again.

How much does gate motor repair cost?

The price depends on what failed (a capacitor or sensor costs far less than a control board or gearbox), the operator brand and model, and whether parts are in stock. We always give you a written quote before starting work. Call (954) 287-4978 for a free estimate.
